Description of the field of study: 

The principal objective of the degree is to promote graduates who will be able to meet the latest requirements in the area of broadly-defined 'intelligent' buildings. Construction industry is under pressure to meet higher and higher expectations of its clients on the one hand, and a number of legal requirements, especially in regard to energy efficiency of buildings, on the other. Management systems for intelligent buildings provide a cohesive solution to the above problem. By reason of that, for several years now, the demand for specialists in this area has been growing. Combining knowledge in the field of electrical engineering, civil engineering, architecture and environmental engineering is the only way to provide competences required for efficient performance of tasks related to the design, programming and building management systems for intelligent and energy efficient buildings.

There is no shortage of fundamental courses in electrical engineering which have been expanded to include modern systems of energy management and renewable energy system installations. A large number of courses dealing with programmable controllers and control and measurement systems give the graduate skills that can be applied to many related industries. A set of courses in civil engineering including fundamentals of building construction, physics of buildings and structures, design and investment project management. 

This is an interfaculty field of study provided by three faculties of TUL: Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering; Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering; and Process and Environmental Engineering.

The following specializations starting in the fourth semester are pending:

building automation systems (BAS) – dealing with a number of topics concerning the building's internal and the closest external environment;

measurement systems for electrical power installations and grids – envisaging smart buildings in smart cities powered from smart grids.

Graduate profile: 

Graduates with a degree in this field of study will be able to find job opportunities in the design as well as in the implementation sector. By virtue of the interdisciplinary nature of their education, they will find it easy to collaborate with their colleagues designers, technologists, architects, electrical engineers, civil engineers, IT engineers and other specialists and will be able to pursue their careers in project teams in the private and public sectors.
