Students of materials engineering are trained to solve materials engineering problems, including the improvement of manufacturing technologies and the development of functional materials. In the course of study, they acquire competence in the field of materials design, including specific, non-typical structural and performance requirements. They learn to design technological processes to create materials' required properties, apply advanced methods of analyzing the structure and properties of materials as well as analyze and assess their functionality. They analyze and evaluate the quality of materials, manufacturing, and processing technologies. Upon graduation, they are able to carry out research and issue expert opinions on the causes of materials degradation and wear. They have the ability to manage and improve the processes of material processing, manage technological processes and conduct research in research and development centers. They are prepared to undertake creative development work in the field of materials engineering and technologies, including the latest advancements in the field of materials engineering. They are able to lead interdisciplinary research and development teams.
The revised curriculum includes two specializations:
surface engineering - carried out at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, the graduate has gained broad knowledge in the field of fabrication and modification of surface layers of materials used in devices, machines, and tools for various industry sectors, including machine, automotive and aviation industry.
functional polymeric materials - carried out by the Faculty of Materials Technology and Textile Design, the specialization prepares students for jobs in various industries where polymer technologies and modern functional polymeric materials are used. The curriculum is designed to enable students to learn advanced knowledge and skills in the fabrication, analysis of properties, and application of functional polymeric materials in medicine and other industries.
Graduates with a degree in MATERIALS ENGINEERING from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering can be employed in in industrial establishments where different types of machines and technical equipment are used, organizations involved in the design and/or manufacture of different types of materials, products, and machines for the production/processing of materials. Graduates can work in small and medium sized enterprises, including those dealing in advanced equipment, machine parts, and providing services in the area of repairs, selection of materials and technologies for the manufacture and processing of materials. They can also embark on a career in science and research institutes and R&D centers, as well as in institutions involved in technological consulting and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of materials engineering, manufacturing/processing technologies and operation of machines and equipment, design and consulting offices, institutions manufacturing research equipment, machine parts and computer equipment, applying the latest developments in materials engineering and manufacturing/processing technologies.
