Environmental Engineering in Civil Construction

The main objective of the education in the second cycle degree program is to broaden the knowledge acquired during the inżynier degree studies, which will enable the student to develop the professional skills required, in particular, for conceptual, expert, and scientific research work.

The program allows students to advance their knowledge in science, life sciences, technical and engineering sciences, and acquire specialist knowledge and skills in the area of systems, networks, and installations in environmental engineering, in particular:

• modernization and ensuring reliability of network operation and land development,
• exploitation of renewable energy sources (including solar, geothermal, and biomass) and alternative water supply sources (grey water [sullage], rainwater),
• ensuring safety of building networks and installations in development and transformation of urban areas, rising social expectations and climate change (e.g. rainwater management systems, including green infrastructure), air-conditioning systems ensuring thermal comfort,
• environmental monitoring, including on-line technology and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) for air quality control,
• modern inspection, measurement, and control systems in building installations,
• audits, technical descriptions, energy performance certificates for buildings,
• modeling and optimization of systems used in civil engineering/environmental engineering with the aid of specialist computer software (e.g. SWMM, EPANET, AutoCAD, QGIS, OZC and CO Auditor, NormaPRO, Therm, EnergyPlus, Arcadia-Thermo, Arcadia-BIM).

With regard to the above, students also learn practical skills through a number of projects, engineering studies and measurements carried out in the laboratory and/or in the field, as well as through study visits and traineeship at specialized enterprises and municipal facilities. They also carry out projects and studies in cooperation with students of architecture and civil engineering, taking advantage of BIM (Building Information Modeling), which ensures that they are fully qualified for the implementation of design and construction projects in their further professional careers.

Linking this degree program with civil engineering, architecture, and urban planning allowed the designers of the program curriculum to distinguish it from similar degree programs offered by other higher education institutions, whereas the knowledge and skills learned by students allow them to pursue professional licensure of unlimited extent in managing construction projects as well as in design.
