Bioeconomy is an interdisciplinary inter-university degree program, carried out under the UT3 cooperation agreement between three technical universities, i.e. Lodz University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, and the Military University of Technology. Each of the universities conducts admissions for this program individually, while the accepted applicants pursue a common curriculum: the first three semesters at their home university, the next three semesters, the so-called rotation semesters, are completed at PL (semester IV), PW (semester V) and WAT (semester VI). The final semester, (semester VII), is completed at the home university. Graduates are awarded one degree certificate issued jointly by the three universities.
The curriculum is designed to introduce new technologies in the area of bioeconomy including in particular food processing, environmental engineering, bioenergetics, and industrial processes. It includes engineering knowledge from several disciplines including logistics, economics, regulating law, and intellectual property management. The curriculum develops innovative approach to problem solving and the competence to cooperate in science and business. Bioeconomy is the first engineering degree program in Poland with so defined educational goals.
During the studies, students acquire skills related to the design and functioning of devices, processes, and systems required in bioeconomy. These include: skills in the implementation of production and technological processes of processing renewable natural resources and their use in the production of food, industrial products, energy and biofuels; the ability to integrate their knowledge of biotechnology, chemical engineering and technology, environmental engineering and mechanical engineering, which enables them to acquire the ability to design interdisciplinary solutions; skills in quality management systems for the economy, occupational safety, copyright and industrial property protection.
The curriculum of the Bioeconomy degree program is designed to train specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge who are prepared to solve basic practical problems, design equipment and installations, and work in research and development teams to implement innovative technological solutions. Therefore, the program provides technical personnel who meet the high requirements for engineering staff ready to cope with the changing needs of the job market.
